Friday night was 's Girls Night Out for Christi, Nicole, and Michelle (2 of her friends up here). As the old saying goes "when the girls are away, the boys will play," Brian (Michelle's husband) and I (the other Brian) took the younger kids out to the local racetrack. Hannah and Bree (Brian & Michelle's daughter) decided to stay home with Allison instead of trying something new. Anyway, we had a blast!
The racing was carried out with two different classes - both classes are glorified go-carts with different engines and an enclosed body. The smaller class had racers as young as 9 years old, while the youngest racer in the bigger class was 14, racing against adults. We bought checkered flags for the kids, and at the conclusion of the races, walked across the track to check out the pit area. All of the drivers just hang out afterwords, talking with the fans and signing autographs. We enjoyed it so much, we stayed there until nearly 10:30 that night.
Last night, we took both families (complete with 12-year-olds) to the races, the last of the year. Just as much fun as the night before, but with a party at the pits at the conclusion. There were several crashes (nothing serious), and lots of 'rubbing' by the different drivers as they got a little aggressive on this last race. The track set off fireworks at the end, served cake, and gave away door prizes (Trevor won a Matchbox car).
There was also a race for the kids at the intermission, where the kids lined up at the finish line, and ran one lap around the track, being required to pick up at least 4 rocks enroute. Hannah and Bree were too embarassed to participate, but it was fun to watch the others racing around the track. Good way to burn energy, too! The flag guy (sorry - I am not an expert, so I don't know what he is called) let Trevor up in his little booth to wave the checkered flag after all of the races were done. This track is extremely family friendly. We will definately have to attend several races next summer when the season starts again!
Mike (one of Brian's boys) asked one of the crew chiefs for an autograph, and the guy was so excited that somebody wanted him to sign something that he gave us all t-shirts! So, each of us were wearing the racing t's, checking out all of the cars. Quite a night!

Love the NAPA hats! Does anyone else find it a little odd that you are doing the NASCAR thing in Alaska, when you lived in GA for 5 years? I will, however, refrain from making any of the redneck jokes regarding NASCAR that YOU taught me.
