Today, The Northern Larsen Family and the Andrew Family (our friends that went racing with us) went prospecting! There is an operating gold mine just north of Fairbanks that runs a train ride/tour of Alaskan mining history, and a demonstration on how sluice mining is accomplished today. The tour culminates with each person handed a bag of pay dirt (this is actually a mining term, referring to the dirt dug up around a promising site), where we were taught how to pan for gold. Each one of us found a bit of gold, the value ranging from $3 (Allison had the lowest, much to her chagrin - she is SOOOO competitive about some things...) to $21 (I was able to pull the most gold out of the rocks). It was an absolute blast! The mine offers to purchase the gold you pan out, but we decided to keep it, and are making Christmas ornaments/"snowglobes" out of the gold flakes.
We would have taken more photos, but we (meaning "I") neglected to charge up the camera battery before this super cool expedition.
